Professional Development Requirements:
1.Educators working full time as a teacher of record in an Illinois public school:
- Owe 24 hours per school year in the cycle that you are working. If you work all 5 years as a teacher, you will owe 120 PD hours before you can renew
• You must enter into ELIS the name of the activities completed, the date on which it occurred, the number of professional development hours received and the name of the provider. Only PD offered by approved providers will count. Approved providers will issue Evidence of Completion Forms to educators for use as proof of professional development. Please retain these for auditing purposes. An official transcript will be acceptable as evidence if you are using classes for professional development. Educators will be audited randomly by The Illinois State Board of Education.
2. Educators endorsed and working in a position that requires an administrative endorsement in an Illinois public school:
- Owe 20 hours per school year in the cycle you are working as an administrator. If you are an administrator for all 5 years, you will owe 100 PD hours to renew.
- Owe one (1) Administrator Academy each year you work as an administrator. Failure to complete the academy by June 30th of the school year, will result in an additional penalty course being added for that year. Please note, Illinois Administrators' Academy courses will be entered in ELIS by the provider rather than the licensee, and the evaluation will need to be completed by the educator in ELIS in order for the academy to populate in the PD record.
3. Retired Educators from Illinois Public Schools:
- You will owe professional development if you worked as a full time teacher of record in an Illinois public school anytime during your current five year cycle. You will owe 24 PD hours for each year worked. You will not be able to renew until the PD is entered.
- In the Profile Box on your credential page, click on the icon that looks like a pencil, and click on Update your PD/Employment status. Change your status to “Retired” for the years you were retired in the current cycle.
- Once all PD is entered (if you owe any) a “1” will appear in the Action Center on your home page next to Renewals. Follow the directions in the wizard. If you are marked as retired, you will not owe anything on the payment screen for renewal.
4. Educators not working in an Illinois Public School, or Educators with a PEL working as a substitute teacher/teacher’s aide:
- If you are not working full time in an Illinois Public School as a teacher of record you will not owe professional development for renewal.
- In the Profile Box on your credential page, click on the icon that looks like a pencil and then click on “Update your PD/Employment Status”. Mark “Exempt” for years effected. You will owe renewal fees to renew, and your professional development hours will be adjusted.
